“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” 1 Corinthians 13:7
You have moments-those times when God seems to be against you, when everything seems “off” and He seems far, far away. And you let Him know about it, don’t you? Maybe you don’t voice accusations out loud, but you think about how He wouldn’t let certain things happen if He were really good. You point out that He could have intervened differently if he wanted to. You assume He has let you down.
It’s okay. Most of us have those thoughts. In our honest moments in the midst of a trial, we fear that we are out of sync with God-or worse, that He might be out of sorts with us. The mind can go to a lot of bad places when we feel distant from God. That’s when we can develop imperceptible grudges that last decades and keep us from fully trusting Him. Those are opportune moments for bitterness toward God to seep into our souls.
What’s the solution? No matter what you’re going through, determine to look at God through love-colored lenses, which are far more accurate than our natural perceptions. Apply the well-known truths of 1 Corinthians 13 not only to others but also to God. We are called above all else to love Him, after all, and if love is patient, then we can choose not to be impatient with Him. If love bears all things, then we can choose to bear all things. If love always hopes and always perseveres….well, you get the picture. If we love God, we can look past our trials and troubles to see God’s heart of love somewhere behind them. When we do, the distance we feel between us and Him begins to disappear.
Father, I know You are with me and for me. I choose, even against my natural perceptions, to show my love for You by being patient, trusting, and hopeful, and by persevering in whatever I face today.
