“ I am very jealous for Zion; I am burning with jealousy for her.” Zechariah 8:2
Imagine your soul mate, the person with whom you’ve had the deepest heart connection in your life, is with someone else. Instead of taking long walks, having long talks, and spending romantic evenings with your true love, your mind is filled with visions of your true love loving another. It gnaws at your heart, doesn’t it? Jealousy is a brutally painful feeling. Yet this is how God says He feels when His people give their love to others.
Cab God really feel jealous? Isn’t jealousy among the attitudes of the flesh? It’s true that it made Paul’s list of unholy fruit of a sinful nature (Galatians 5:19-21); jealousy can be misplaced, selfish, and destructive. But there’s also a kind of jealousy that’s a necessary aspect of true love. If someone in a supposedly exclusive relationship of intimate love didn’t care if the other person strayed, his or her love wouldn’t be very strong. Holy jealousy is part of holy love.
Scripture says God’s name is Jealous (Exodus 34:14), and Paul said he was jealous with the jealousy of God Himself (2 Corinthians 11:2). That means at least two things for us: (1) God is passionate about receiving our exclusive devotion; and (2) when His Presence shapes our hearts, we’ll feel His jealousy for His people and long for others to worship Him. Holy jealousy will rise up within us when love meant for Him is diverted to less worthy objects. We’ll be passionate about true worship.
Let God’s jealousy impact you deeply. Know that He is zealous for your love and for the love of others. Give Him you heart exclusively, and pray that others would do the same. Give Him all the affection he so earnestly desires.
Lord, let me sense the pleasure in Your heart and “see” Your smile. Even in my most stressful, anxious times, impart You joy to me. Change my perceptions and help me know You as a happy, delighted God.
